CyberKnife

CyberKnife

Description

CyberKnife is a robotic device to perform radiosurgery with precise radiation delivery to the organs affected with benign and malignant tumors.

Features

This method allows destroying tumors without incisions and pain; it is frequently used as an alternative to surgery when neoplasms are hard to reach or cannot be operated. The radiation is directed accurately, so it does not affect healthy tissues or organs. Treatment with CyberKnife is an outpatient procedure: just after a session (it lasts about 30-90 minutes), a patient can return home and their everyday activities.

Result for Breast cancer

During the study, 20 participants with early-stage breast cancer had the CyberKnife therapy after breast-conserving surgery. The follow-up continued for 2 years. According to the investigation, 100% of patients experienced no local recurrence or distant relapse during a follow-up for 27.7 months.

CyberKnife
Gamma Knife

Gamma Knife

Description

Gamma Knife is a radiosurgery device to manage radiation therapy. It uses 192 radiation beams to precisely target brain tumors. Each beam goes separately through the healthy brain tissues, and then they meet together in the target delivering there a high radiation dose.

Features

The procedure is painless, performed without incisions and anesthesia. It is an alternative to traditional surgery for hard-to-reach or inoperable tumors. A GammaKnife session does not require admission; a patient can go back home and return to allowed activities just after a procedure.

Result for Breast cancer

62 women with brain metastases from breast cancer underwent treatment with GammaKnife. The study showed a median survival rate was 1.5 years after therapy. The local control of metastases was achieved in 70.5% on average for 12 months.

How do you usually treat breast cancer?

Sirshendu Roy

HCG Manavata Cancer Centre

Breast cancer is treated after confirmation of the diagnosis by testing a small piece of the affected tissue. Then we provide a few tests to assess the spread of disease and its nature in the particular patient. When we confirm the diagnosis and find out the results of its spreading and cause, we consider treatment with surgery to remove the disease locally and in the armpits. Or we inject medicines (chemotherapy) to reduce the spread, and then we perform surgery. After surgery, the patient may undergo chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy (treatment with rays). Some cases also need oral tablets for 5 years after the treatment.
